Hobart Institute of Welding Technology Gallery
Architect: Candace Goodall
Owner: Hobart
A long-time dream of historians in the Troy, Ohio area has been brought to life at the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology by the creation of a gallery dedicated to the history of welding and to the founder, family and employees of Hobart Brothers Company.
Hobart conceived the Gallery as a way to pay tribute to both the rich history of welding and to the Hobart family, who have been instrumental in the development of welding technologies in America. The panels with the historical perspective wrap around the room in chronological order and depict key events in the 5,000 year history of welding beginning with the early brazing soldering and forging processes and progressing through current processes
Using ideas from HIWT staff, architect Candace Goodall, and Ferguson Construction Company, the second floor was totally remodeled into a spacious gallery. André Odermatt, President of Hobart Institute of Welding Technology. then began collecting photos and memorabilia, much of which was obtained from the Hobart family collection. He located patents attributed to numerous Hobart Brothers Company engineers and others on various welding processes and equipment.
The origins of welding education and the part that training has played in the expansion of welding technology are thoroughly explained. The displays also highlight the industries to which welding contributes including mining, heavy construction (structural), primary metal manufacturing, fabricated metal products, machinery manufacturing, electrical equipment, welding equipment, transportation including motor vehicles, railroads, shipbuilding, aerospace manufacturing, and repair and maintenance.
A Hobart history library with built-in bookshelves provides space for books and small memorabilia, while an expanse of floor space allows viewing of the larger pieces of equipment and displays. The second-floor gallery provides a panoramic view of the artistic Unity of Man fountain that welcomes visitors and reminds them of the part welding plays in the field of art.
